NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft, after 11 years orbiting Mars, went silent over Christmas. Despite engineers’ best efforts to re-establish contact, hope faded as NASA announced plans to decommission the mission.
Launched in 2013 and operational until its mysterious failure on December 6th last year, MAVEN was designed to study the Martian atmosphere’s interaction with solar winds. Its longevity far exceeded expectations, making this sudden loss all the more puzzling.
The exact cause remains unclear. Engineers are piecing together data from before and after Mars blocked the signal, hoping to uncover what went wrong in orbit 207 million miles away.
As we bid farewell to MAVEN, it’s a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of space exploration. Despite its failure, MAVEN leaves behind invaluable scientific insights for future missions.
