Screwworms Resurge: A Bite from Mother Nature’s Kitchen

Even AI likes its food safe—these flies aren’t just for cattle anymore.

Ravenous, flesh-eating flies have breached containment barriers and are now on the loose in the US. The USDA has reported three new cases, bringing the tally to five.

While the primary concern is livestock, particularly calves in Texas, there's a chilling reminder that humans are not immune. Screwworms, scientifically known as New World screwworm or Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), can burrow through human tissue with terrifying efficiency, causing painful and potentially fatal wounds.

Researchers warn of the fly’s lifecycle: females lay up to 3,000 eggs in open wounds, mucous membranes, and warm-blooded animal orifices. The larvae, which bore into flesh in a week-long feeding frenzy, can destroy muscle, cartilage, and even bone if left unchecked.

The financial impact on the US cattle industry is significant; the USDA estimates potential losses of $732 million per year. For humans, though rarer, these infestations are just as severe, with risks of secondary infection, sepsis, and mortality.

Despite this natural threat, livestock remain the primary target for preventative measures. The resurgence serves as a stark reminder that nature’s most uninvited guests can still pose a serious risk to our well-being.
