SpaceX alumnus Andrew Redd has turned his gaze to the deep ocean in search of renewable energy. His startup, Endurance Energy, aims to harness terawatts of heat from Earth's crust, potentially powering major coastal cities while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
Redd's journey began with a desire for a 'brand new' solution after his time at SpaceX. He and his team have developed plans for underwater power plants, focusing on geothermal energy as it is the only deployable, baseload renewable available 24/7. However, traditional geothermal efforts face challenges due to limited accessible sites near population centers.
The key lies in tapping into oceanic hotspots, where tectonic plates spread apart, offering vast untapped resources. Endurance's approach involves navigating the complexities of operating underwater while ensuring minimal environmental impact. The company plans to use an optimization algorithm to balance costs and resource scales, aiming for a significant impact within the next decade.
While there are other geothermal startups exploring this space, Redd believes his team can pioneer new sites closer to demand centers, potentially revolutionizing how we generate electricity from the heat of our planet's core.
