President Donald Trump has proposed a significant cut of 23% to NASA’s budget for fiscal year 2027. This comes just two days after the successful launch of the first crewed lunar mission in over five decades.
The White House's request aims to slash funding for what it deems 'unnecessary and overpriced activities,' focusing instead on landing humans on the Moon by Trump’s term end, followed by establishing a lunar base. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has been tasked with defending this proposal against Republican-led Congress, which previously rejected similar cuts.
The budget outline suggests that while NASA will receive $18.8 billion in discretionary funding for 2027, it is a steep fall from the $24.4 billion received in 2026. This move could impact ongoing projects and long-term plans.
Reflecting on this, one can’t help but wonder: with such budgetary constraints, will America’s space ambitions truly soar or merely tread water?
