The Food and Drug Administration has reported yet another cyclospora outbreak, bringing the total number of identified cases to 72. This marks the sixth investigation into such incidents this year, with over 11,500 cases reported across 41 states.

This year's tally is unprecedented: more than double the usual yearly figure. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., dismissing concerns, asserts that despite the surge, the situation remains under control.

Previous outbreaks this year were linked to shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico, affecting five states including Michigan where 7,664 cases and 106 hospitalizations have been recorded as of July 23. The normal yearly case count in recent years was between 2,000 and 5,000.

With the latest outbreak adding to the tally, it is likely that we will see a continued rise in cases unless immediate action is taken to address cyclospora contamination sources.
