Supercooled kidneys have been transplanted into pigs, marking a significant leap forward in the preservation of donated human organs. By keeping kidneys at -4°C without freezing, researchers hope to significantly extend their viability for transplant.
The technique involves submerging organs in a pressure-controlled container with a special solution, allowing them to be stored for days before transplantation, far longer than current ice storage methods permit.
Matthew Powell Palm from Texas A&M University led the research. His team found that kidneys preserved this way functioned better post-transplantation and recovered faster compared to those kept on ice for 24 hours.
The discovery could potentially alleviate the organ shortage crisis, where over 104,000 people in the US alone are waiting for kidney transplants. Currently, one-third of donated kidneys are discarded due to degradation by the time they reach recipients.
While promising, further research is needed before this method can be applied to human patients. However, if successful, it could revolutionize transplant surgery and offer hope where it was once scarce.
