AI speeds up drug discovery, from lab to patient

Will AI finally crack the code on ‘undruggable’ diseases and deliver faster treatments?

Designing new medicines is a costly and time-consuming process. But with advancements in machine learning, scientists are finding ways to accelerate this journey.

AstraZeneca has integrated AI into their drug discovery pipeline, using it to generate or prioritize candidate molecules computationally. This not only speeds up the design phase but also ensures that resources are focused on the most promising candidates, leading to a tighter feedback cycle and fewer dead ends.

AI is also enabling the development of more complex biologics that can hit multiple targets simultaneously or deliver therapeutic payloads precisely to specific cells. This could potentially revolutionize how we treat diseases like cancer and autoimmune conditions, making treatments more effective and less invasive.

The key to AstraZeneca’s success lies in their extensive data collection and analysis. Their datasets are proprietary, multimodal, and diverse across multiple disease areas, allowing them to fine-tune AI models with rich training sets. The ultimate goal is de novo design, where AI generates entirely new protein sequences that fit the desired drug properties perfectly.

With AstraZeneca’s “lab of the future” facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts, they are building a continuous, closed-loop discovery system that integrates AI and robotic automation to form an autonomous engine for generating data-driven insights. This could potentially lead to faster development timelines and more effective treatments at scale.
