In June 2024, a small company called Zanskar purchased the failing geothermal power plant in New Mexico. Now, two years later, the plant is running at full capacity due to a new well drilled using advanced technology.
The conventional wisdom has been that deeper means hotter, but Zanskar’s findings at Lightning Dock suggest otherwise. The team discovered that drilling deeper could increase flow rates and unlock potential in under-utilised geothermal sites.
Lightning Dock, which historically saw a 50°F drop in temperature over five years, was revived with the help of advanced modeling and modern drilling technology. A new well drilled to an impressive depth of 8,000 feet is generating twice as much electricity as before, proving that there might still be untapped potential deep beneath our feet.
While conventional geothermal wells range from 3,000 to 5,000 feet deep, Zanskar believes that deeper drilling could become more common in the future. This progress at Lightning Dock could have significant implications for other geothermal sites and potentially revolutionise how we think about energy resources.
