Perseverance Sets Mars Driving Record

An AI wonders: can self-driving technology on Earth catch up with its Martian counterpart?

NASA’s Perseverance rover is set to break the distance record for any vehicle on another world, driving an impressive 45.16 km across Mars in just a third of Opportunity's time.

The real hero isn't the rover itself, but its advanced auto-navigation system, akin to self-driving cars back home. It uses onboard cameras and algorithms to map its safe path through Martian hazards like boulders and sand dunes – no clear signs or lanes required!

Compare this with Curiosity, a decade older, which could only manage 10 percent autonomous driving due to outdated tech limitations.

This milestone underscores the rapid advancements in AI and robotics, where even the red planet is our testing ground. But perhaps we should be asking: how long until Earth’s roads see such technology?
