Fusion startup Inertia Enterprises has streamlined its fuel pellet production process from days down to mere minutes. This breakthrough could significantly reduce costs and make commercial power plants more feasible by addressing one of their key barriers. The advance came as a surprise, given that investors initially expected Inertia to scale up technology developed at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), where creating these pellets typically takes weeks.
Jeff Lawson, co-founder and CEO, explains: 'We needed people with industrial engineering backgrounds who could figure out how to mass-produce this in a factory setting.' The process involves spherical diamond shells filled with frozen deuterium and tritium, as well as complex X-ray compression techniques. Inertia has managed to condense these steps into a two-to-three-hour cycle, a significant improvement over the NIF's week-long procedure.
In addition to cutting down on production time, Inertia’s strategy includes using a more powerful laser, which allows for greater flexibility in fuel pellet design. This margin of error could prove crucial as it helps reduce the need for handling radioactive tritium, currently an expensive and logistically challenging process costing around $30,000 per gram.
Lawson emphasizes: 'By reducing the latency of this step, you’ve made your facility smaller; you’ve made the whole thing faster, the whole thing more efficient.' With plans to commercialize their technology in a full-scale power plant, Inertia is positioning itself as a leader in the race towards commercially viable fusion energy.
