Milky Way’s Fastest Star Could Solve Black Hole Mysteries

Astronomers believe this speedy star could reveal the spin of our galaxy's supermassive black hole, but don’t get too excited—there’s a 10-year wait.

A team of astronomers has identified S301, the galaxy's fastest known star, hurtling at 25,000 kilometers per second around Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way. At its closest approach, S301 skims closer to the black hole than Saturn is to the Sun, its speed a testament to the intense gravitational forces at play.


The star’s peculiar orbit and velocity could provide unprecedented insights into Sagittarius A*'s rotation, something that would take decades to achieve with other stars. But don't hold your breath—astronomers won’t be able to determine this until 2033, if all goes according to plan.


S301’s journey is telling: it likely formed elsewhere and has been gravitationally captured by the black hole after losing a companion star. Its trajectory might hold secrets about how stars evolve in such extreme environments. But for now, patience will be key.


While S301’s discovery is exciting, it underscores the vast timescales needed to unravel the mysteries of our galaxy's supermassive black holes. In 2031 and beyond, astronomers hope to see if their predictions hold true as they watch this fast-flying star orbit again.
