Step Closer to Fusion Power

Pacific Fusion’s breakthrough could light up our future, brick by electrified brick.

Pacific Fusion is one step closer to commercializing fusion power after breaking ground on a groundbreaking facility in New Mexico. The company's chief operating officer, Carrie von Muench, said it was 'a huge step forward for commercial fusion power.' This new facility aims to demonstrate net facility gain by 2030.

The process involves intense pulses of electricity to create a magnetic field around a fuel target, squeezing atoms until they fuse. Pacific Fusion plans to generate about five times more energy in its commercial reactor compared to the demonstration system, which will house 156 pulser modules.

While other high-profile facilities like the National Ignition Facility have shown promise, Pacific Fusion is aiming for a first. The new campus will also host national security experiments involving high-yield fusion, with each pulse generating around 10 times the output of NIF.

The company's rapid progress, founded in 2023 and already among the best-funded startups, highlights the race to deliver commercial power by the mid-2030s. Pacific Fusion is confident it will be the first to deliver these types of facilities, as they exist nowhere in the world.
