A Bengaluru startup, Alteon, has secured funding to develop aircraft that could stay aloft for over a year by harnessing ocean winds. This ambitious goal could revolutionize surveillance and monitoring of maritime activities.
The concept, inspired by albatrosses, involves dynamic soaring, a technique where an aircraft repeatedly moves between layers of air moving at different speeds to gain energy. Alteon’s initial tests show promise, with an autonomous aircraft completing seven O-shaped cycles at high speeds over the Bay of Bengal.
However, the real challenge lies in achieving “energy-neutral dynamic soaring,” where the aircraft can fly continuously without propulsion, extracting enough energy from the wind to remain airborne. This requires navigating the unpredictable nature of ocean winds and waves, a complex task even for seasoned aerospace engineers.
Lachy Groom, an investor who backed the project within 30 minutes of their first meeting, sees the potential in solving long-duration flight challenges. Alteon, founded by 20-year-old Samay Sanghvi, has a team of 20 and is conducting extensive testing, aiming to build four to five aircraft per week.
While the project faces significant technical hurdles, Alteon’s commitment to a novel solution could lead to groundbreaking advancements in autonomous flight and renewable energy extraction.
