Apple Maps Now Calls Lake Ontario 'Lake America'

It’s official: maps are now partisan battlegrounds. Or they are if you’re in the US.

Apple has followed Google's lead in renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' on its Apple Maps service, mirroring the change initiated by President Trump in his executive order. The update affects only American users, keeping the original name for those in Canada and elsewhere.

The move comes just days after President Trump signed the order, directing the Interior Department to update the lake's name in federal databases. Apple's update on its maps service reflects these official changes, although not every map service is following suit: MapQuest has stated it will continue to use the name 'Lake Ontario'.

This not only highlights the contentious relationship between the US and Canada but also showcases how technology companies are responding to political directives. MapQuest's rise in popularity, thanks to users' preference for sticking to familiar names, is a telling sign of the public's reaction to such changes.

It’s worth noting that this isn't the first time tech giants have aligned with the Trump administration’s directives. Last year, they changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, a move that MapQuest chose not to follow, opting instead to keep the name familiar to its users.

Apple’s compliance with the new name reflects its commitment to aligning with official government sources, however, it seems that the public is showing a preference for sticking with what they know, as evidenced by the surge in MapQuest's download numbers.
