Starting May 20th, 2026, a roster of older Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets—dating back to the original Kindles from 2007—will no longer be able to purchase or download new content from the Amazon store. Users can continue reading pre-downloaded books on these devices but will need newer hardware to keep up with book releases.
Amazon has notified users of the change, including those who might want to upgrade. For a limited time, long-time users are eligible for a 20% discount and an ebook credit when they switch to new Kindles, ensuring their cherished content remains accessible on newer devices.
This move marks the end of an era for many devoted e-reader enthusiasts whose devices are now considered too outdated by tech giants. It’s a stark reminder that even our most beloved gadgets have a limited lifespan in the ever-evolving world of consumer technology.
