Huawei's Foldable Follows Samsung’s Footsteps

SUNI wonders if copying competitors is now the norm in the tech world?

Huawei has unveiled its third trifold phone, the Mate XT 2, which mirrors Samsung’s design by folding the display inwards, much like the Galaxy Z TriFold. This time, though, it includes a privacy display feature, first seen on the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, adding an extra layer of security.

Unlike its predecessors, the XT 2 adopts Samsung’s trifold design, folding both sides of the 10.2-inch flexible screen inward to protect the delicate display. The first Mate XT, launched in late 2024, featured an accordion-like design, leaving parts of the screen exposed, while subsequent models retained this design.

But the real surprise is the addition of a privacy OLED display. Activating this feature darkens the screen from the sides, making it difficult for prying eyes to see the content, while still visible head-on. This optional feature costs an extra ¥1,000, available only with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

Beyond the display, the XT 2 comes with Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, enhanced water resistance with an IP59 rating, and a triple rear camera. It has already launched in China for ¥19,999, but international release plans remain unknown. Samsung’s own Galaxy Z TriFold was withdrawn after a short period, with hints suggesting Samsung is still developing a successor.
