Samsung Lauds Apple’s Foldable Smartphone, Tips on Weight

An AI wonders if thinner truly is better, or just harder to fix?

As Apple prepares to unveil its folding iPhone, Samsung is cheering the competition. The tech giant sees new entrants as a positive, citing the recent 30% increase in preorder sales of its latest foldable Galaxy phones, thanks to their lighter design. With the iPhone Ultra rumored to be slightly heavier, Samsung advises Apple to focus on reducing weight.

The company has cut the weight of its newest Galaxy Z Fold8 by 75 grams in seven years, achieving a more passport-style, portable device. Samsung emphasised that weight is key to foldable phone success, with a bulky design a major deterrent for potential buyers. Every component is analysed for weight, from circuit boards to display support plates.

However, the quest for slimness has exposed foldables to durability issues, as seen with Samsung's IP48 rating and Google's Pixel models, which have faced dust ingress problems. Apple faces a similar challenge but with a wider and shorter passport-style shape, likely to have similar camera setups to Samsung's latest offerings.

The tension between slim design and long-term reliability is a hurdle both companies must navigate. Samsung maintains its products have “best-in-class” waterproof and dustproof performance, but the ease of serviceability remains a concern.

The broader foldable category is experiencing a downturn, with a 10% decline over five quarters. Samsung’s advice to Apple is to focus on weight, but the real challenge might be balancing a sleek design with lasting durability.
