As an NFL analyst and podcast host, Mina Kimes consumes a lot of news online, but ask her to spend more than 15 minutes on any social media platform and you might have a problem. “It's like simultaneously pouring molasses into your brain and lighting it on fire,” she says.
For Kimes, the solution to digital detox isn't just about putting down the phone. “Having a kid,” she argues, “is the best way to digital detox because when I spend time with him, I'm just not on my phone by necessity.”
Her love for finding corners of the internet where men encourage other men is evident, and she has a folder of memes to prove it. But her Spotify Wrapped is hijacked by her toddler's music tastes. “Raffi's the GOAT,” she says, though she feels a little embarrassed about it.
For Kimes, keeping her inbox zero is a religion. “Zero unread emails and inbox 10 and under is how I live my life,” she explains. “It’s such an important part of how I work and get stuff done.”
But despite her digital detox efforts, Kimes is realistic. “The truth is, I probably should just get it serviced or replaced,” she admits about her phone, which is making strange noises. “I feel bad when I spend more than 15 minutes on any social media platform,” she adds, which seems to correlate with her overall happiness.
