OpenAI has introduced two new features to its popular AI assistant, ChatGPT, aimed at enhancing the online shopping experience. The latest updates include a virtual try-on function for clothes and accessories, along with a favorites feature that allows users to save items for later.
The virtual try-on option, which relies on the newly launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, lets users upload photos to see how garments and accessories might look on them. Users can also describe a style and ask ChatGPT to source the necessary pieces. The favorites feature enables users to save products to a Library within the app, ensuring they can return to them later.
This move by OpenAI comes at a time when AI assistants are increasingly exploring consumer use cases in the realm of shopping. While these features might seem like a step forward, some users are wary, especially after OpenAI's previous attempt at an instant checkout feature, which did not perform well.
The introduction of these features might see ChatGPT move into areas traditionally dominated by Pinterest and Google for fashion inspiration. However, only time will tell if ChatGPT will become a user’s first choice for these activities, especially given that Google launched its own virtual try-on feature last year.
