Cloudflare has just acquired Deno, the runtime that’s shaking up the programming world. This move is set to enhance Cloudflare’s Workers platform, enabling users to craft and execute software right within the Cloudflare network. According to Cloudflare’s Kenton Varda, Deno’s latest offering, celld, has already won over the Cloudflare team. Varda believes that by remaining open-source, Cloudflare is not just building better models but also offering a way out, dispelling the notion of creating a 'lock-in' environment.
Meanwhile, Deno’s co-founder Bert Belder and creator of Node.js, Ryan Dahl, are joining forces with Cloudflare to ensure that the Workers programming model becomes the go-to solution for server building. This acquisition hints at a future where coding flexibility and open-source collaboration reign supreme.
While the financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, it’s clear that Deno’s $26 million funding, led by Sequoia, has put it in a strong position to make a significant impact. With both teams working together, the future of cloud computing and coding could be looking up, or at least running in a more open direction.
