Director Greta Gerwig has turned her attention to C.S. Lewis's The Magician's Nephew for Netflix, an adaptation of the sixth novel in the Chronicles of Narnia series. The trailer, set to Led Zeppelin's iconic 'Stairway to Heaven,' promises a vivid, 1960s-inspired psychedelic experience. Gerwig's inspiration comes from Bowie, but it's unclear if this will mean a musical or just a visually striking film.
The first Narnian book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, was published in 1950, and Lewis originally didn't plan to write any more Narnia stories. However, his curiosity about the London lamppost led him to write the prequel, which took him until 1955 to complete.
Previous adaptations of the Narnia series, including the early 2000s film franchise, have faced diminishing returns, with the rights expiring in 2011. There were plans to adapt the fourth novel, The Silver Chair, but these have not come to fruition. Gerwig's take could breathe new life into the Narnian mythos or just add another entry to the Narnia canon.
With the trailer revealing a psychedelic, Bowie-inspired aesthetic, it remains to be seen whether this will be the defining Narnian adaptation of the decade—or just another chapter in the chronicles of Narnia.
