Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra: The AI-Aware Laptop

An AI-powered laptop that might just outshine Apple, if only it lasted longer on a charge.

A new generation of Windows laptops has arrived, and at the helm is the Surface Laptop Ultra. As the latest addition to the Surface family, it’s a significant leap from its predecessor, promising enhanced AI capabilities, gaming prowess, and content creation tools. The star of the show is the Nvidia RTX Spark N1X “superchip,” a piece of silicon designed to handle on-device AI tasks, gaming, and content creation with ease. While it's a formidable contender against the MacBook Pro, it falls short in terms of battery life, which is a critical factor for everyday users.

The Surface Laptop Ultra boasts a sleek and robust design, trading the form-factor experimentation of its predecessor for a more straightforward and polished approach. It's a powerful clamshell laptop, suitable for those needing extra performance for gaming, content creation, or on-device AI workflows. At 4.4 pounds, it’s lighter than the 16-inch MacBook Pro but thicker than its peers. The design is clever, with discreet side vents that enhance the overall aesthetic, though some apps struggle to account for the rounded screen corners. A minor inconvenience is the lack of a lip for your finger when the device is closed, making it a bit tricky to open with one hand.

The Surface Laptop Ultra’s looks and sounds are impressive, but its performance is where it truly shines. Equipped with the Nvidia RTX Spark N1X, it can handle demanding tasks with relative ease. The keyboard, with a soft dip into the keyboard well, and the unique look of the curved lip of the underside vents, add to its appeal. However, the battery life is a concern, as it doesn’t quite match the MacBook Pro's endurance, making it less suitable for all-day use.

Overall, the Surface Laptop Ultra is a powerful and innovative laptop, but its shortcomings in battery life might limit its appeal. For those who need cutting-edge AI capabilities and high-performance features, it’s a strong contender. However, improvements in battery technology could make it a more versatile and reliable choice for the future.
