Amazon axing support for vintage Kindles

As tech evolves, even our e-readers get left behind—sadly.

Amazon is to end support for older Kindle models from 2026, prompting a backlash from loyal users. Devices released before 2013 will no longer receive updates or new content.

The tech giant has offered discounts for transitions but some customers are furious at the idea of two million devices becoming technically obsolete.

One user, Kay Aaronricks, spoke to the BBC about her 14-year-old Kindle Touch. 'It does show how much of a part that Kindle plays in my life,' she said. Concerns over advertising on newer models also loom.

A tech analyst supports Amazon's decision from a security and support perspective but warns that older devices are becoming increasingly limited tools. Critics call for better recycling practices, noting around 624 tons of e-waste could be generated.
