Figma co-founder Dylan Field has expanded his company's support for the model context protocol (MCP), despite his reservations about its perfection. At the Config conference in India, Figma announced 20 new MCP partners including Amp, ClickUp, and Meta Muse. Field, however, remains critical, highlighting the protocol's potential for abuse as a reason for Figma's cautious approach.
"I find it interesting that Anthropic, creators of MCP, do not expose artifacts created via MCP,“ Field wrote on X. “The debate is framed as open versus closed, but issues of asymmetric context sharing are ignored.”
During a media briefing, Field explained, “MCP is not a perfect protocol. It is advantaged more towards frontier labs. I want everyone to use Figma data, but we have to think about the risks of exposing more data through MCP.”
Figma's CEO added that while most users won't misuse the data, the company must still consider the potential for abuse. However, Field remains optimistic about opening up the ecosystem, stating, “I’m really excited about what we’re doing in terms of opening up our ecosystem.”
For Field, the key is striking a balance between openness and security, acknowledging that while MCP has its flaws, it's still an essential step forward in the world of AI protocols.
