Spotify has introduced a new way for podcasters to monetize their content, by offering paid memberships that come with a range of perks beyond just bonus episodes. These perks can include fewer ads, early access to shows, or exclusive audio and video content, depending on the creator’s preferences.
The streaming service has rolled out this feature to 34 markets, including the US, and it’s part of Spotify’s strategy to attract more podcast creators as it moves into the video space. While podcasters have long been able to monetize through ads, this new model could entice more fans to support their favorite shows by offering more value.
To qualify, podcasters must host their shows on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone and meet certain audience and content criteria. Fans can subscribe and access this exclusive content through the podcast’s Spotify page. A handful of shows, including 'The Adam Friedland Show' and 'Making Sense with Sam Harris', will be among the first to offer memberships.
This launch is part of Spotify’s broader initiatives to make its platform more attractive to podcast creators, alongside advertising and the Spotify Partner Program. It also includes tools to help creators grow their audience, like promotions, free trials, and analytics.
