Spotify has removed over 50 million tracks it deems AI-generated 'slop' or spam from its recommendations, aiming to highlight more music from human artists. The move follows similar actions by other streaming giants like YouTube Music and Bandcamp, each taking varying stances on AI-generated content.
Spotify’s editors maintain a strict standard, avoiding programmed content that is AI-generated. Since these changes, the company reports a notable drop in listener complaints about unwanted AI tracks. It’s also introduced an 'AI Persona' badge for artists claiming AI identities, ensuring they don’t mimic real individuals.
In a bid to stay relevant, Spotify plans to partner with Universal Music Group and Believe to create a tool for AI music remixes. However, this move has sparked debates about the authenticity of music and the role of human creativity in an increasingly digital world.
