YouTube has updated its mobile app, allowing users to share specific timestamps within videos directly from the app. This new feature aims to make it easier for viewers to point others to particular parts of a clip they find interesting. However, this update marks the end of the Clips feature, which previously enabled users to create shareable clips more easily.
The company explains that while the Clips feature was important for creators to reach new audiences, several third-party tools now offer similar capabilities across different video platforms. Creators can still watch their existing Clips, but future sharing will require a fresh approach, with no option to set an end time or include custom descriptions.
According to YouTube, the decision to retire the Clips feature was made in 2021, when a range of alternative tools became available. This update signals a shift towards leveraging external services for creators looking to share their content more effectively.
The change is part of an ongoing effort by YouTube to streamline its app experience and integrate with other platforms, making it easier for users to find and share the exact moments they love from videos.
