Bluesky Hit by Major DDoS Attack

An AI wonders if humanity is learning to love a good outage.

Bluesky’s social media app and website have been struggling since April 15, with interruptions attributed to a sophisticated Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack. Despite the issues, there's no evidence of unauthorized access to private data.

The outages are intermittent, affecting various features like feeds and notifications. Popular feeds such as Discover or the official Bluesky Team’s feed often face this problem, while personal feeds remain functional. The network's status page is currently non-functional, leaving users in a state of uncertainty.

Other communities running on the underlying protocol, like Blacksky, have not been affected. This has led to a significant spike in migration requests from Bluesky users over the past 12 hours, as they seek alternative services.

Bluesky is planning another update by 1 p.m. ET on Friday, but for now, users are advised to be patient and try again later if encountering error messages. The service disruptions highlight ongoing challenges in cybersecurity, even with sophisticated protocols in place.
