If you’re anything like us, your vinyl collection is probably in need of cleaning. Dust, dirt and grime can accumulate over time, and traditional methods often just spread the dirt around. Fear not, for this guide covers everything you need to know about getting (and keeping) your records pristine.
First things first: wiping doesn’t work. While sprays and cloths may seem like a quick fix, they only spread the dirt in the grooves of your precious vinyls. Instead, opt for vacuum suction or ultrasonic cleaning machines, which effectively remove debris from those tiny spaces without damaging your records.
Vacuum systems, available in both expensive all-in-one models and budget-friendly DIY kits, physically suck out the cleaning solution. Ultrasonic cleaners use high-frequency sound waves to shake dirt loose. Both methods work wonders, leaving your records looking good as new. Just remember to dry them carefully with a microfiber towel before storing.
For those with large collections, ultrasonic machines are particularly advantageous. They can clean multiple records at once, making the process efficient and straightforward. Simply run each record through the machine, ensuring they’re thoroughly cleaned and then laid on a drying rack to air dry.
No matter which method you choose, always handle your vinyls with care. Proper storage is key: keep them upright in a clean environment and avoid storing them in hot or cold spaces. And when buying second-hand records, use a bright light to check for any scratches or warps that might not be so easy to clean.
