Music streaming services like Spotify and YouTube Music have become the primary way people listen to music, which can be a lot more convenient than buying individual albums. However, this also makes it easier for AI-created tracks to worm their way into your playlists.
Deezer has developed technology to identify such content, with its latest update revealing that 44% of new uploads are AI-generated. What’s more, most of the streams are likely fraudulent, as Deezer claims only a tiny false positive rate for its detection technology.
The rise of generative audio models means that AI music has taken off in the last few years. According to Deezer, users have trouble differentiating between AI tunes and those made by humans—97% of listeners in a survey were unable to tell the difference. This raises questions about how much our musical preferences are influenced by technology.
AI-generated tracks can sound like generic, over-produced music created by humans. With the right context and prompting, an AI track could easily slip under the radar and blend into human-made content on streaming platforms. Deezer has licensed its detection technology to third parties, with 75,000 new AI tracks uploaded every day.
