Framework has unveiled an updated motherboard with Intel's Core Ultra Series 3 processors, available for the existing Framework Laptop 13 or as part of a new Pro model. While updates to screens and keyboards are in line with previous product announcements, this time the company is placing more emphasis on its support for Linux. Nirav Patel, CEO of Framework, has positioned the new Laptop 13 Pro as 'the MacBook Pro for Linux users.' According to the company's own surveys, they have slightly more Linux users than Windows ones on their 13-inch model.
The company’s teaser site referenced The Matrix and Ubuntu Certification, highlighting its commitment to open-source. While only about 3-4% of general users use Linux, Framework's products attract a more technically savvy audience, where the balance tips towards Linux. The new emphasis is part of an effort to navigate current shortages in RAM and storage, though the exact impact on sales remains to be seen.
Patel also explained that different models have varying ratios of Windows to Linux users, with the 16-inch model showing a stronger preference for Windows. This shift towards Linux could indicate a growing acceptance among tech enthusiasts or simply reflect Framework’s marketing strategy in response to market needs and customer preferences.
