Bluesky has doubled the file size limit for photo uploads to 2MB and increased image resolution to up to 4000px. The app now features a swipeable carousel instead of a grid layout, allowing for better display of mixed aspect ratios without cropping.
The changes could level the playing field with other social networks, like X or Meta’s Threads, which were praised for their support of various aspect ratios and the use of carousels. These updates might make Bluesky more competitive in the photo-sharing space but may also introduce a choice that early adopters will likely argue over.
The shift towards a swipeable carousel reflects a trend among social media platforms to enhance user experience by offering more flexible and visually appealing ways to interact with content. While this change could improve the overall viewing experience, some users might miss the grid layout's simplicity and prefer the option of choosing between formats.
These upgrades are part of Bluesky’s broader strategy to elevate its platform and make it a more attractive destination for photo enthusiasts. However, the introduction of new features always comes with the risk of complexity, which may not be universally welcomed by all users.
