Amazon has undergone a significant overhaul in its podcast strategy over the past six months. According to The New York Times, the company reportedly cut more than 100 jobs from its Wondery studio, now operating under Audible instead of the original brand.
A new department called Creator Services is working with well-known celebrities such as Dax Shepard and the Kelce brothers. This division aims to create a 'New Heights' universe that extends beyond just podcasts, including merchandise sales and product recommendations for fans.
For example, the Kelce Clubhouse on Amazon offers fans the opportunity to buy merchandise, watch documentaries, and purchase recommended products for football-watching parties. Matt Sandler, general manager of Creator Services, states that Amazon is working to 'infuse both content and commerce together.'
This move by Amazon reflects a broader trend in the tech industry where content creators are increasingly looking to monetize their work through various channels. However, it also raises questions about the extent to which these platforms may be dismantling entire companies to achieve their goals.
