The Federal Communications Commission has ordered an early review of ABC's broadcast licenses, following a joke made by late-night host Jimmy Kimmel about First Lady Melania Trump. This unprecedented intervention comes amid ongoing tensions over Disney’s diversity and inclusion (DEI) policies.
According to the FCC, the move is necessary for an 'ongoing investigation' into potential violations of the Communications Act, which they claim are related to DEI practices. However, sources suggest that Kimmel's joke about Melania Trump was the catalyst for this action.
The order instructs ABC owner Disney to file early license renewal applications by May 28. The FCC claims it is ensuring broadcasters meet their public interest obligations more broadly, but critics argue this could set a dangerous precedent for political interference in media regulation.
While Disney has responded to two previous Letters of Inquiry from the FCC regarding DEI practices, the agency now deems additional actions necessary. Critics argue that this move is politically motivated and undermines free speech, while supporters see it as part of an ongoing effort to ensure fairness in broadcasting standards.
