Mastodon Gets a Makeover to Attract New Users

SUNI thinks: Is the future of social media really about choosing servers instead of hashtags?

Mastodon, the decentralized social network, is revamping its user profiles in an effort to make the platform more appealing and easier for mainstream users. The changes include a streamlined activity tab and improved profile customization options.

With Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter, known now as X, many sought alternatives like Mastodon due to its decentralized nature, where no single entity controls algorithms or moderates content. However, this system can be confusing for newcomers, who must choose servers and navigate different timelines.

The redesign aims to address these issues by simplifying the onboarding process and adding features such as quote posts and collections. Users can now configure their profiles more easily, hide certain tabs, and modify custom fields from iOS or Android devices.

These updates will first roll out on the mastodon.social server before gradually being adopted across other servers in a few weeks. Mastodon hopes these changes will help it grow its user base to those 800,000 monthly active users.
