Spotify is introducing a 'Verified' badge to help users distinguish between real artists and those created by artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to identify the authenticity of over 99% of artists on its platform, highlighting those with significant contributions to music culture.
The company will prioritize verification for established acts rather than content farms, though concerns have been raised about how it might unfairly label smaller, independent artists who lack commercial markers like tours or merchandise sales. Critics suggest Spotify could be more transparent by automatically identifying AI-generated content instead of relying on badges alone.
Spotify's move comes amidst ongoing debates over the role of AI in music creation and consumption. In 2023, CEO Daniel Ek stated there would be no ban on AI-generated content, while a band called The Velvet Sundown faced accusations of being an AI project despite having a large following.
Professor Nick Collins from the University of Durham pointed out that distinguishing between human and AI artists could be challenging, especially as AI usage becomes more nuanced. The verification process will roll out over the coming weeks, potentially reshaping how users interact with artists on Spotify.
