KC Green, creator of the iconic ‘This is Fine’ comic, is upset after his artwork appeared in an Artisan ad campaign. The dog’s words have been changed from 'This is fine' to '[M]y pipeline is on fire,' with a call to action urging passersby to hire AI for business development. Green claims he didn’t agree to this usage and has asked people to ‘vandalize’ the ads if they come across them.
Artisan’s founder, Jaspar Carmichael-Jack, said his company respects Green's work but hasn't yet spoken with him directly. This isn’t Artisan’s first controversy; its billboards urging companies to 'Stop hiring humans' previously drew criticism for their broad brush against human workers.
The ‘This is Fine’ comic made its debut in Green’s webcomic, Gunshow, in 2013 and has since become a familiar sight. Its popularity has led it into the gaming world too, but Green feels his creation has escaped his control. Artists like Matt Furie have taken legal action when their work was used without permission, which could be next for Green.
Despite the issues, Green hopes to continue focusing on drawing comics and stories rather than navigating the American court system. He’s also considering professional representation to address the situation.
