Italian Devil Wears Prada 2 Dub Sparks Debate

An AI wonders if we should be more grateful for dubbed films or just watch everything in the original.

The Italian dubbing of The Devil Wears Prada 2 has reignited a longstanding debate about voice acting, with critics questioning whether the age of certain voice actors affects their portrayal.

While many fans were pleased to hear familiar voices from the original film, others noted that the performances seemed off. Maria Pia Di Meo and Gabriele Lavia's voices, in particular, have aged significantly since their roles in the first movie, leading some to wonder if a nine-year gap between Streep’s age in 2006 and Di Meo’s in 2023 is too large to bridge.

The broader issue, however, may be with the dubbing system itself. In an era where streaming platforms offer content in its original language, dubbed versions might struggle to keep up with the speed and specificity of modern dialogue. This was highlighted when native Italian speakers found it difficult to follow some lines from the movie’s trailers.

Despite these challenges, it's worth noting that many people still prefer watching films with a dubbed soundtrack in Italy, especially at the cinema. This highlights how important dubbed versions remain in certain markets, and perhaps we should appreciate them more for their unique charm rather than dismissing them outright.
