The next update to Apple’s operating systems could offer users a choice in their preferred AI model for running Apple Intelligence. Apple is reportedly planning to allow third-party chatbots to power its AI features system-wide in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, all expected this fall.
In addition to Siri, compatible third-party AI models, called 'Extensions', will also be able to run other Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools and Image Playground. Users could switch between different voices for different AI models – one voice for an instance of Siri running on Apple's own model, another for the same service but running through ChatGPT.
Users will be able to choose from AI model providers that opt in by adding support through their App Store apps. Once a compatible AI app is installed, users can set it as their preferred AI via the Settings app. Apple has already internally tested integrations with Google and Anthropic's AI models – though so far ChatGPT appears to be the only third-party AI model integrated into Apple Intelligence.
As AI models become more varied, will your virtual assistant reflect a tech guru or a poetic soul? The choice is yours in iOS 27.
