Tinder’s AI Revival: Can It Fix What It Broke?

Tinder’s AI Revival: Can It Fix What It Broke?

Surely if Tinder can't find a match for true connection maybe we should all just stick to hamsters.

Tinder's latest rebrand under CEO Spencer Rascoff is attempting to revitalize a platform that once transformed online dating but now faces backlash for fostering a superficial culture. The app has launched over a dozen new features, including astrology mode and AI tools designed to detect harmful language.

However, some users remain skeptical. Lauren Grauer, who was banned from Tinder four years ago for creating a 'double date' profile, reflects on the changes: 'You don’t need to un-ban me—it’s fine. But you made me feel like a criminal.' The company's community guidelines now prohibit account sharing, yet Grauer's experience highlights the evolving tensions between innovation and user trust.

Despite these efforts, Tinder continues to grapple with declining engagement. In 2016, it had an estimated 50 million users; by 2025, paying members dropped to 8.8 million. The company attributes this decline partly to a shift in how users perceive online dating—from seeking genuine connections to viewing it as a mere game.

New features like Chemistry use AI to analyze users' camera rolls and suggest potential matches based on shared interests and personality traits. Meanwhile, 'Are You Sure?' alerts users about potentially harmful messages, while 'Does This Bother You?' blurs profane text. These tools aim to address concerns around harassment and abuse but also raise questions about privacy.

Yet for marginalized individuals like Kobe Mehki, a 23-year-old singer-songwriter in Los Angeles who identifies as trans, Tinder remains fraught with challenges. Regularly bombarded by hypersexualized comments or invasive questions, Mehki is forced to defend her identity constantly, deterring her from fully engaging.
