Google’s New Widget Lets You Ask for Anything

Is this the dawn of a new era where personal assistants become our tech overlords? Probably not, but still neat.

Google has introduced a groundbreaking feature called 'Create My Widget' that allows users to generate custom widgets using natural language. For instance, you can request weekly high-protein meal prep recipe suggestions or create a weather widget displaying only wind speed and rain data. The software, dubbed Gemini, integrates with Google apps like Gmail and Calendar, providing personalized dashboards for events and personal data.

This move marks Google's push to deepen the integration of generative AI into everyday Android experiences. Ben Greenwood of Google stated that this feature is akin to asking a personal assistant a question and having them provide an ongoing answer. Users can create widgets tailored to their needs, from family reunion planning to fitness tracking, making customisation more accessible than ever.

The new feature will debut on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones in summer 2023. Alongside its release, Gemini Intelligence was introduced, which includes advanced autofill and an AI-powered voice dictation feature for Gboard. These innovations signal a growing trend of tech companies striving to personalise user experiences through artificial intelligence.

While this development could revolutionise the way we interact with technology on our mobile devices, it also raises questions about data privacy and the role of AI in daily life. Nonetheless, it's an exciting step forward that could make smartphones even more indispensable tools in our lives.
