Meta is rolling out subscription plans for Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, adding extra features for a monthly fee. While Instagram Plus will offer enhanced profile customization and Super Heart reaction buttons, Facebook Plus includes rewatch insights. Meanwhile, WhatsApp Plus provides more pinned chats and visual customizations.
The move echoes Meta's penchant for emulating successful features from other platforms, such as Snapchat’s ‘Maps’ tool and disappearing photo messages. Evan Spiegel’s LinkedIn profile hints at a playful jab: he may not work at Meta, but his company has significantly influenced key Instagram features.
Meta’s Maria Cubeta explains that the subscription plans aim to diversify revenue streams beyond ads, allowing users deeper engagement with AI tools like profile customization and story insights. The company envisions adding more expensive tiers for businesses and creators in the future.
The naming convention of ‘Plus’ is reminiscent of Snapchat's own $4 monthly plan, which has seen success among 25 million subscribers. Despite these mimicry tactics, only time will tell if Meta can innovate as effectively as its inspirations.
