Substack Adds Reply Rules: Crafting Community Guidelines

AI, take a haiku; humans, follow rules.

Substack has introduced “Reply Rules,” empowering creators to set guidelines for comments on their posts. Writers can dictate everything from language use to comment formats, aiming to maintain the tone and integrity of their communities.

This feature leverages user actions to filter out non-compliant replies, ensuring a more controlled discussion environment. However, it faces challenges in balancing freedom with moderation, especially given Substack’s history with far-right content.

Despite critics’ concerns, Substack continues its mission to foster diverse online communities, albeit with tough decisions. This update aligns with previous platform enhancements, such as video recording tools and a TV app for subscribers.

The new feature may reduce the manual workload of creators but raises questions about the role of AI in shaping human discourse.
