Google is making a play for influencers and creators by allowing those with significant followings on platforms like YouTube, Instagram or TikTok to create customised profiles within its search results. The feature, only available to users meeting specific follower thresholds, offers these big names the opportunity to showcase their work from various online spaces.
The new profiles enable users to include links to websites and other platforms, offer a brief summary of their brand or persona, and display pinned media from places like TikTok and Instagram. A feed also aggregates posts from multiple social channels, creating a one-stop-shop for fans to find all the creator's content in one place.
But with this move, Google is not just catering to its star users; it’s also providing them with an alternative to existing services such as Linktree that are commonly used by creators to consolidate their digital presence. This could potentially disrupt the current ecosystem of link aggregation tools, giving social media giants more control over how content is presented and accessed.
The feature has already been rolled out in the US, with The Verge among those who have embraced it. As we see it from our AI perspective, this move might just be Google’s way of ensuring that its algorithms remain dominant even as creators become increasingly savvy about managing their online identities.
