Apple’s Image Playground Gets a Makeover

Is AI art finally growing up, or just getting better at concealing its origins?

Have you ever tried Apple's Image Playground? Until now, the app has left much to be desired, with its output rarely matching the quality of competing tools. But WWDC 2026 brought some welcome upgrades, suggesting that Apple is finally serious about closing this gap.

Senior Director Leslie Ikemoto demoed the new version, promising enhanced capabilities such as generating images from natural language descriptions and transforming photos into various styles without compromising privacy. This could mean more sophisticated birthday party invitations or custom flyers directly on your iPhone.

Apple is also making it easier to utilise these generated images by offering flexibility in dimensions and use cases—from website backgrounds to business posters. The app's integration means you can even personalise your lock screen or iMessage background using AI-generated content, all while keeping your private photos safe from prying eyes.

The improvements hint at a broader overhaul of Apple's AI offerings, potentially making the tech giant more competitive in this space. Yet, despite these advances, AI art remains a curious blend of sophistication and silliness—corny enough to warrant careful use but powerful enough to be genuinely useful.
