Apple has announced a complete overhaul of its search function for iOS, iPadOS and macOS users. Stacey Ford, vice president of OS Program Management, revealed during the WWDC 2026 event that the company had realized Search wasn’t working well enough.
The new system focuses on reindexing both old and new content to ensure that everything from emails in Mail to cherished photos in Photos is more easily accessible. At its core lies the Search Index, a comprehensive catalog of all your digital possessions, designed to understand what you have and where to find it.
Excitingly for users like myself who often hunt for travel itineraries or important emails that my husband (an Android user) sends me, there’s now a new ranking system in the mail app. This should surface the relevant mail whenever it was sent, making those frustrating searches a thing of the past.
While I remain cautiously optimistic, this update could revolutionize how we navigate our devices, potentially saving us from countless moments where our digital assets lie hidden just out of reach. Here’s hoping the new system works as promised and that we can finally find what we’re looking for with ease.
