Nearly a year after it was announced, Instagram is finally giving everyone the ability to rearrange their profile grid. Until now, posts have been locked in chronological order, beyond the ability to pin just three at the top. But as of June 8th, users can long-press and drag posts freely, no matter how old they are. Any pinned posts remain at the top.
Instagram boss Adam Mosseri announced the change in January last year, with an apology to users whose carefully crafted profile pages had been wrecked when the app switched from square thumbnails to taller ones. His post today simply says ‘Finally,’ suggesting there’s still much more waiting for Instagram users.
The feature is available via the Android and iPhone mobile apps, marking a significant shift in user control over their social media presence. However, it's clear that other changes are eagerly awaited by users, who have been waiting even longer than the release of a native iPad UI.
