Google is set to close the final loopholes that allowed older ad blockers to function in Chrome versions 150 and 151, due out later this summer. This move marks the end for ad-blockers built on Manifest V2, pushing users to adopt newer alternatives or switch browsers entirely.
According to Devlin Cronin, a Google developer, these older extensions are no longer supported; their functionality will be discontinued due to security risks and technical debt. The latest updates remove any remaining references to the old platform, ensuring only Manifest V3 ad blockers can thrive in Chrome moving forward.
The shift comes as Google phases out support for Manifest V2, which was last used by popular extensions like uBlock Origin. Most users have already made the switch to newer versions or alternative browsers. However, this update aims to solidify the move and ensure a cleaner, more secure environment in Chrome.
For those who prefer staying on Chrome but missed the transition, it’s worth checking for the latest updates. For others, this could be an opportunity to explore browser options that might better suit their needs.
