Snap's eagerly anticipated AR glasses, Specs, debuted with a bang – or rather, a thud. The company's stock took an immediate nosedive, down over 5% in the first day of trading post-launch. This follows a broader decline of 30% in shareholder value over the past year.
The price tag is notably steep: nearly £1,648 per pair. For Snap’s primary audience – teens and young adults – this might as well be solid gold. How many Snapchat filters could you buy with that much? A lot more than one pair of Specs, apparently.
During a CNBC interview, CEO Evan Spiegel defended the price point by framing Specs as akin to high-end computing devices, similar in value to powerful laptops or top-of-the-line computers. He argued that while cheaper and lighter options like Meta's Ray-Bans offer less power, and bulkier headsets like Apple’s Vision Pro are even more expensive, Specs occupies a unique middle ground.
Despite the steep price, Spiegel believes the glasses will be both 'highly wearable but also incredibly capable for immersive computing.' Whether this convinces users to part with such a significant sum remains to be seen, especially given the current economic climate and the already crowded AR market.
