For the first time in 53 years, New York Knicks fans will be celebrating their NBA championship win with a parade through lower Manhattan. While many will party in person, others are turning to an artist’s livestream via traffic cameras for remote viewing.
Morry Kolman's project, GardenCam, has been streaming and archiving footage from various traffic cameras along the parade route since the Knicks’ historic finals run against the San Antonio Spurs. After a game 2 win, which he describes as ecstatic, Kolman felt compelled to capture the broader citywide excitement.
The project began with live coverage of fans at Madison Square Garden but took an unexpected turn after a devastating loss in Game 3 and President Trump’s presence, leading to increased surveillance around the area. Despite initial concerns from the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) over safety and unauthorized use of traffic cameras, Kolman's project has now gained their tacit approval.
While the parade will see several streets and subway stations closed, bikes and scooters prohibited, GardenCam offers a unique perspective on the celebration. For those stuck at work or afar, it’s an opportunity to feel part of the festivities in real time.
